You know them. You follow them. But did you ever stop to think that you could be one of them?
Social media influencers have taken the marketing world by storm. They produce gorgeously-crafted content that makes us feel like we should be living that life – which, by the way, is precisely the mirage that fuels the success of influencer marketing.
So, what is influencer marketing?
Influencer marketing is the act of a social media account actively persuading and engaging with their audience, generally with the intention of selling a product, brand, or trend. Whether it’s an account focused on fashion, lifestyle, sports, or anything else under the sun, the main goal is to sell their audience on a given product or brand that that particular influencer is endorsing. A common misconception reflected on social media influencers is that only those with celebrity status or have a monumental following are a part of this club – which is far from the truth.
Anyone who has pull on social media is, in fact, an influencer. Typically, influencers hone their niche market and collaborate with companies to promote products that speak directly to their custom audience. Social media influencers successfully capture the attention of their audience through their content and the style of their posts, and the more specific their niche is, the better it is to attract potential brand partnerships.

As with any relationship, it takes time to establish trust in follower-influencer relationships. Successful influencers make a point of interacting with their followers, particularly when they’re first starting out. Respond to DMs, reply to comments on your posts, and be sure to reach out to like-minded accounts that you feel could create a great sense of camaraderie with your brand.
Social media influencers have found success lately due to their digital presence; they’re relatable to the point where their followers look forward to their daily Insta Stories. When it comes time for them to feature a product/brand partnership on their Instagram, we instantly trust the opinion of our favourite influencers, almost as we would if one of our friends raved about a product.
Yes, you can be an influencer, too!
Picture this: your favourite influencer, the one with over 1M followers, once created their IG account and their follower count stared back at them as a dismally depressing 0. Every valuable thing in this world takes hard work and dedication before it reaches its full potential, and just like each of your favourite influencers, you too can build your social empire if you put in the time and effort into your strategy.
If you’re thinking about trying your hand at social media influencing, start planning. Describe your ideal follower/consumer, what kind of brand image you plan to set for yourself, and how you can start by getting your name out there. By creating original content that engages with a specific intended demographic, you’ll be on your way to success in no time!
