Ah, Monday. It’s once again time to hop in your car, or catch the bus or metro to your office and dive headfirst into a busy new workweek. Only problem is – you’re entirely unmotivated to get out of bed. There’s a reason why many people experience the ‘Monday Blues’; after a weekend of living on their own terms, workers are suddenly expected to snap back to corporate conformity and adhere by office law. Commuting to the same workspace Monday through Friday can create a rhythm of monotony, teaching workers to expect only the expected and deny them the resources required to unleash creativity and unique ways of thinking.
In today’s world, you can work from anywhere so long as you have a reliable wi-fi connection. Why be constrained to one office space when you can virtually establish an office on-the-go wherever you may be? Good question, right? That’s why today, we’re going to talk all about the art of working remotely!
You’re more inclined to be productive
Recently, a U.K. transit system offered free wi-fi to their passengers and monitored their web browsing habits. With unlimited internet access, transit users had the ability to scroll ‘n swipe through their social media feeds or read the latest Buzzfeed articles to their heart’s desire.
However, the study revealed that over 60% of passengers used their gratuitous wi-fi during their commute to catch up on emails and prep for their upcoming workday. Unsurprisingly, working on-the-go is a mass movement that people everywhere are opting for every day – even when they aren’t being paid to work in transit. So, what makes working on-the-go so appealing?
A change of scenery is a great thing
A change of pace and scenery can be a great way to stimulate new ideas and tap into creative resources. In turn, this can prove for a higher level of productivity throughout the day. Being confined to the same office space day in and day out can take a toll on your mental health, and drain your energy (particularly when you may not want to be in the office in the first place).
If you don’t have the opportunity to spend your entire workday out-of-office, being paid to work as you commute could be in the cards in the near future. Norway’s got the right idea: certain Norwegian employers are experimenting with letting their employees count commuting time as paid working time, so long as the employees are working on their way to work. While this is a new concept, we can definitely see this potentially becoming a huge work trend.
Serotina’s work culture: #KEEPSOCIAL wherever you are!
At Serotina, we believe in remote workspaces. Our entire team works from their own laptops at home, in coffee shops, co-op work spaces, or wherever else we feel that we will be most productive that day. Just because we don’t hang out in a single office doesn’t mean we spend the workday alone; we routinely have check-in meetings and are readily available on Slack. We’re not a fan of conforming to the traditional 9-5 office hours, because let’s be honest – sometimes you just can’t roll out of bed that early in the morning, no matter how dedicated you are to your job. We definitely honour our responsibilities and respect deadlines, and as long as we get the job done and meet our goals, we don’t see the need to stick to traditional office norms. Besides, working remotely is much more fun anyway. We get to #KEEPSOCIAL no matter where we are 😉
