Social media policies; chances are, you’ve (at the very least) heard of them. However, the fact of the matter is that many businesses don’t use them or recognize their value. While NDAs and Codes of Conduct are staple documents that every company ensures to have, social media policies are often left on the backburner.
But what is a social media policy, exactly? Essentially, it’s a document providing guidelines on social media etiquette for your employees to refer to and abide by – and we’re firm believers that your brand needs one.
Chances are, the majority of your employees are active social media users, and while there is a line between work and personal life, that line can become relatively thin when it comes to personal social media profiles and curating their digital selves inline with company image. This is where a social media policy steps in 😉
Today, we’re going to dive into some concepts to include in your company’s social media policy!
Engage and Post Responsibly
As we all know, engagement is key on social media – but you and your employees need to be mindful of how an individual’s engagement or posting habits can affect the perception of the company.
Even outside of work hours, an employee is an advocate for the company that they work for. In your social media policy, emphasize the importance of posting consciously and how taking the time to think about how your actions on social media reflect on the company.
Avoid Online Drama
With so much information readily available on social media, there’s bound to be a few articles you come across that rub you the wrong way from time to time. However, before you head to the comments section and unload your opinion, take a step back and anticipate the consequences your comment could invite.
Not everything and everyone online is worth your time. The majority of the time, engaging with online content with a negative intention is both unnecessary and unproductive. This includes getting into comment wars with strangers… definitely not a cute look. Just like mom used to say, if you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all!
Aim To Inspire
Social is all about being a part of something bigger that drives the world to be better. Encourage your employees to use their social media as platforms to voice their informed thoughts, their hopes, their dreams. You never know who will be inspired by your content!
What’s most important above all else is to maintain a positive vibe and outlook through your content. Your social media policy should, of course, outline the “don’ts” of posting, but should also encourage employees to express themselves creatively online in a way that respects themselves and the company image.
That’s all for this week! We hope this kickstarted your brainstorming for how you’re going to craft your own social media policy! Interested in learning more about SM policies? Check out this article!
