Your Guide To Using Emojis On Social Media 🙌

Jan 9, 2019

Emojis: you love ‘em, we love ‘em, and we all use ‘em all of the time – but are you making the most of their usage? In a business setting, increasing the amount of and types of emojis you use can further connect your business with your audience and paint a more vibrant, exciting picture of your brand. In short, the impact you have on your audience can be pretty dependent on your emoji use across your business’ social media platforms. In fact, messages with accompanying emojis have seen increased engagement by up to 50%*! That’s a lot of power in a smiley face! 😉

While you’re probably used to adding an emoji or two to the end of your social posts, you want to be sure that you’re using the right ones. Follow along with our brief, comprehensive guide to learn how to effectively incorporate emojis into your brand’s social campaigns for better results!

Know Which Emojis To Use

An emoji can completely (and unintentionally) alter your message if you’re not careful. You want to choose emojis that flow seamlessly with the vibe of your brand and that actually add an extra element to your message, while being mindful of character usage (which can help you in instances where you’re limited by the amount of characters allowed per post, such as Twitter’s 280 character maximum).

For example, some safe and fun emojis to use include: 🎉 when announcing a winner in a social media giveaway,  🤯 when sharing some mind-blowing info, 😍 when you love something. There are some riskier emojis to be weary of, though. For example, 🍑 and 🍆 have notoriously gained a sexual connotation in social media rather than be known for, y’know, being a couple of innocent vegetables. Always pay attention to whether your emoji has a double entendre to avoid awkwardly misconstrued messages!

Know When To Use Emojis

Did you know that more than 92% of social media users use emojis?* This means that chances are, your followers are big on emojis too, and will likely respond enthusiastically to brands that routinely use them appropriately. There are so many different ways to use emoji that can add to your brand messaging, including in your account bios, in your social media posts, and in your comments on social media.

In your bio, use emojis to highlight what you and your brand do. For example, Serotina’s Instagram bio features the 📍to show where we’re located and  the 📲 emoji to highlight our weekly blog posts!

When using emojis in your social media captions, use them to emphasize the personality of your brand. Glossier always does a terrific job of this, as proven in the example below. In this case, the content is composed of a very ordinary, un-staged photo (possibly taken by a happy customer!). The true marketing genius lies in the caption copy and emoji usage, which represents a glowing “holy grail”.

In comments, use emojis to capture a certain mood. Sometimes, you don’t even need to use words. For example, the 🔥 emoji is often used as a comment in itself, meaning that something is super hot or on point!

Use Emojis For Engagement

As we’ve already mentioned, emojis can replace language in certain instances. An emoji can express a certain idea or sentiment, and depending on your audience, can harness more engagement when used properly.

A simple way to spark engagement is to hold a contest through your brand’s account for your audience. For example, having “Comment your 5 favourite emojis [related to a topic] to enter this giveaway!” as a caption will likely get you far more comments than if you’d asked them to write out their answers.
